Box modeling a low poly head in blender3d
Posted on 2017-04-21 in blender3d
This is a quick video demonstrating a relatively simple way to block out a very low poly head (which can be used as a sculpting base, or refined further with additional detail) in blender 3d. The approach uses box modeling - cube with loopcuts and insets.
This is not really a tutorial and is not a timelapse.
The primary reason for uploading is that there seems to be a shortage of video dealing with box modeling on youtube, and main focus of most tutorials/videos is edge modeling. Meanwhile those few videos that deal with box modeling often skip nose area or start knifing and restitching it manually... or make way too many loopcuts at the back of the head, etc.
Basically, I've been looking for a way to quickly make this kind of basemesh from a box for some time, while having somewhat sane topology from the start. Today, I watched one more "anime head" tutorial, carefully looked over its head topology and the approach clicked for me.
So I decided to make a quick video and upload it.
It is worth mentioning that this is a very low poly model, and quite a lot of things could be improved. There could be more details, some more loop cuts, an edge loop that follows jawline, nose loop could be done a bit differently as well.
Still, as a base approach for making low poly heads (or head basemeshes0 I think it works.
